Davi Herbe Lawrenc David Herbert Lawrence was born in Eastwood, a mining village in Nottinghamshire, in 1885. His father was a miner, but his mother belonged to a higher class: she had been a schoolteacher. The marriage between his parents soon became an unhappy one (his father became an alcoholic), and his mother pushed David to go beyond the restrictive mining world: he went to college, became a teacher and started writing poems. During his whole life David had a very strong bond and relationship with his mother that greatly influenced his works (as in the novel “Sons and Lovers”) - when his mother died, he went through a deep crisis. He had an affair with a married woman and they eloped to Italy to get married in 1914 – they travelled a lot (Mexico, Australia, France) before he died of tuberculosis in 1930. Some of his novels (The Rainbow: Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover were banned by the censors for obscenity. “Son an Love” “Sons and Lovers” is a novel by Lawrence, written in 1913. It is both an autobiographical novel and a meditation on the Oedipus complex: it shows great signs of the bond between Lawrence and his mother. The story, just like Lawrence's life, starts with an unhappy marriage between a coal miner and his wife Mrs Morel – they have 3 children who are estranged from the father and strongly attached to their mother. Paul, the eldest, is the protagonist of the novel. Paul's relationship with his mother influences his whole life: in fact, he is unable to have a healthy, fulfilling relationship with any woman: he rejects his first girlfriend, Miriam, because he finds impossible a physical relationship with her and then he has an affair with a married woman, Clara Dawes who only satisfies the physical part of their relationship.
