DAVID HERBERT LAWRENCE 1885 - 1930 Biography • He was born in 1885 in a poor mining village in the English Industrial Midlands. His father was a violent and alcoholic miner. • At the end of World War I, Lawrence began to travel around Europe with his wife Frieda, visiting Austria, Germany and Italy. • He translated Giovanni Verga’s Mastro Don Gesualdo and wrote a travel book about Sicily and Sardinia, Sea and Sardinia. • He died in France in 1930. Problems with censorship Several Lawrence’s works (Lady Chatterley’s Lover at first; the novel was initially published in Florence because of censorship in England) were banned by the censors for their contents, considered sexually excessive. Sons and Lovers (1913) • Based on Lawrence’s personal experience (the contrast between his parents; an alcoholic father; the difficult relationship in a miner’s family; the setting in provincial northern England; the main character’s division between his mother and the girl he loves) • Oedipal complex (→ Freud’s studies)
