Born in 1885 in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. a coal mining town His father was a coal miner and his mother belonged to a higher class. He became the centre of her mother’s emotional life after the death of his brother Ernest. This mother-son relationship is the key to the fiction he wrote. He eloped with Frieda von Richthofen Weekley, the German wife of a French professor at Nottingham. The couple married in 1914 after Frieda's divorce.
