Dickens + Oliver Twist Dickens' novels are peopled by typical characters, often portrayed as caricatures embodying particular vices or virtues. Starting with Oliver Twist, Dickens' novels increasingly focused on social criticism. Novel after novel, the writer faced issues like the consequences of the Industrial Revolution on the lives of the poor, the living and working conditions of the working classes, education, child labour, the legal system and crime. Dickens' purpose was to denunce the social evils of the time and to make his readers aware of them. Dickens' social world included people from all walks of life: gentlemen, lawvers, industrialists, teachers and labourers. Dickens was fascinated by urban life and many of his novels were set in London, but there were exceptions. Hard Times was set in Coketown, a typical town probably inspired by Preston, in the industrial north of England. Charles Dickens' sympathy with the oppressed, his indignation against social injustice, made him one of the most significant voices in the Victorian Age. Oliver Twist is perhaps his most famous and most popular and marks the beginning of social criticism. Through the story of an orphaned boy, the novelist touched upon the exploitation of children and the cruelty of the workhouses. Oliver is a poor boy who knows nothing about his parents. He is brought up in a workhouse, treated very badly and then escapes to London. In London Oliver meets the Artful Dodger who introduces him to a gang of pickpockets. On his first outing with the gang, Oliver is arrested but Mr Brownlow, the man who was robbed, takes pity on him and takes him home. He then discovers that Oliver comes from a respectable background but his half-brother tried to cut Oliver out of his share of their inheritance. In the end, Oliver gets his inheritance and the criminals are punished. The setting is Victorian London. Childhood and the destructive effects of maltreatment and poverty are two of the main themes. In Dickens's times, many poor children were obliged to work in terrible conditions or driven to crime. Dickens attacks the cruelty of individuals and institutions that treated innocent children so badly.
