Simone Sgrigna 5°D 30/03/2020 The Dubliners “Eveline” Exercise 1: The story takes place in Eveline’s living-room, and it’s evening. The interior of the room is characterized by darkness, dust and rubbish. Eveline feels tired.  The world outside her window makes her think about her past, in particular a period in which her, with her friends, played in a field, until a man from Belfast, decided to build some houses in that place.  Eveline’s father was a violent and an impulsive man, and so he played a negative role in the Eveline’s past because, for example when his daughter went outside to play with her friends, he always interfered.  She notices a picture of a priest, and so she discovers that he was a school’s friend of her father. Also she notices that next to the picture there is a promises made to Blessed Mary Margaret Alacoque; it’s familiar to her and so she comprends their advanced age.  Eveline considers her job as a boring employment, and she considers her superior a “bad” woman, beacause she always blame Eveline.  She has agreed to leave her home beacause she wanted to resign from her job and looking for a new job in another country, with the aim to finding a better people who would have appreciated her. And also she ha sto be Frank’s wife.  Frank is her boyfriend and he is a mariner.  She remembers Frank’s courtship, his kindness, and his being kind. In particular she remembers the first time she sow him and when they went to the theater. She also remembers that he used to call her poppese and sometimes he sang the song of the sailor, who falls in love with a girl.  Evelin’s father forbade her to meet him again and so they decided to meet secretly.  The sound of the organ reminds her to the death of her mother, and so her father had paid a organ player to move from that street.  She sees her mother’s live as a life of commonplace sacrifices. Her mother’s last words probably means taht for Eveline was arrived the moment to left the house.  Eveline is caught between a future far from her family and from her home, with is boyfriend Frank, and the importance of her hometown.  Eveline is terrified by the idea to remain in Irland, because she wants to live happy with Frank.  Frank represents to her a savior. Exercise 2: 1. Eveline is on the dock (before in the North Wall station). 2. She is surrounded by a swaying crowd. 3. She suddenly freezes and so she isn’t able to achive his beloved and therefore the the ship. 4. Her relationship with Frank turns out to be a superficial relatioship because, when you read the last few lines of the story, you understand that Eveline is very close to her family and to
