Elizabeth First The virgin queen Elizabeth first’s reign is often considered England’s golden age. It was an age of stability, religious toleration and victory at sea. It was the time of entertainment and the rising star of Shakespeare. Elizabeth came to the throne at 25. She was clever and determined. She consolidated the reformation by re-introducing the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity. Church doctrine was Protestant and culminated in the 39 articles of the Anglican faith. She received many proposals, but she considered marriage dangerous. She thought that a foreign husband would subject England to overseas rule, while an English one would create factions and plots. When parliament pressed her to marry and produce an heir, she replied that she would rule and die a virgin. This is why she was called the virgin queen. The ryal prgress Elizabeth took regular tours around the country, known as Royal Progresses, to show her person and the power of her office. She received hospitality from her richest subjects, who regarded her visits as a privilege. Danger frm Sctland Mary, queen of Scots, returned to Edinburgh from France when her husband, the king of France died. She was the great-granddaughter of Henry the 7 and had a claim to the English throne. She had a son, James, with Stuart lord Darnley. When her court forced her to abdicate in favor of her son, she went to England hoping to receive help from her cousin Elizabeth. She was arrested and kept prisoner in the Sheffield castle, where she became the center of conspiracies against Queen Elizabeth. Mary was executed for treason in 1587. Explring the sea Elizabeth encouraged her sea captains to explore new lands. One of the captains left for South America in search of gold, while another captain brought African slaves to America. Sir Francis Drake combined royal authority for exploration with piracy that captured gold transported by Spanish ships.
