ELIZABETH I (PAG 82-83) Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and Anne Boley. daughter, became queen of a divided nation the majority of which was anti-Catholic and anti-Spanish. She had a strong personality, with a lively intelligence and a passionate character. She had received an excellent education and spoke French, Latin and Italian with ease, and possessed extraordinary political skills. As queen, she faced many problems: marriage and succession, religious division, domestic discontent and foreign threats. Unlike Mary, she showed remarkable religious tolerance, restoring Protestantism firmly through the Church of England but allowing Catholics the freedom to worship. She never married, but she used the possibility of marriage as a political weapon, encouraging the hopes of European princes with whom it was important to keep on good terms. She said that the Queen was married to her people', and the country eventually accepted this idea and began to make a cult of their Virgin Queen. This adulation was the result of a carefully crafted and brilliantly executed propaganda campaign in which the queen made herself the symbol of the nation's destiny. To demonstrate her power and majesty, she wore magnificent clothing adorned with jewels. She showed herself to her subjects in triumphant Royal progresses. She also had numerous portraits painted and encouraged the growth of culture, inspiring literature, music, drama and poetry. Elizabeth saw Spain as England s main trade rival and enemy. Both nations were involved in expanding their economic power through exploration and overseas trade. Elizabeth took an active interest in the navy and ship-building. She secretly encouraged English sea captains, like Francis Drake, in their piracy against Spanish ships carrying precious metals, tobacco and slaves from America and Africa. She turned a blind eye and took a share of the profits. In 1588 the Spanish decided to invade England and sent a great armada of 130 galleons to the English Channel. The Spanish ships were slower and heavier than the English ships, which were lower in the water, faster and armed with long-range guasied Fitatnsh to a the tundations for Enclands oversercada, Supremacy atsca enabled Elizabeth to lay the foundations for England's overseas colonies, chartering seven companies to explore and settle in the name of trade.
