Emily Brontë July 30th, 1818 ㅡ Most important work: -Wuthering Heights Emily was the fifth child of the Reverend Patrick Brontë and his wifeMaria Branwell Brontë. The family moved to Haworth in April 1821 and a few months later, her mother died of cancer. At the age of 6, Emily was sent to the Daughters of the Clergy School. Elizabeth andMaria, her sisters, became very ill at school and returned home, where they died of tuberculosis in 1825. Brontë's father also removed Emily and Charlotte from school. At home in Haworth, Brontë enjoyed his quiet life. He read a lot and startedmaking up stories with his brothers. They created stories inspired by the toy soldiers given to Branwell by his father. In 1835, shy Emily tried to leave home for school. She went with Charlotte toMissWooler's school at RoeHead. But she only stayed a fewmonths before returning to Haworth. Coming from a poor family, Brontë tried to findwork. He became a teacher at LawHill School in September 1837, but left his position the followingMarch. Brontë and her sister Charlotte traveled to Brussels in 1842 to study, but the death of their aunt Elizabeth forced them to return home. Wuthering Heights Wuthering Heights is the name of the house that the Earnshaw family owns on a high andwindy hill in Yorkshire. It also represents in the name the nature and the indomitable strength of the passions that upset men. Here the foundling Heathcliff is welcomed and brought up byMr. Earnshaw. Between Heathcliff and Catherine, daughter of Earnshaw, a deep emotional understanding is established. Over the years the relationship cracks due to the emergence of class barriers and Catherine undertakes tomarry Edgar Linton, rich and kind, whose property borders that of the Earnshaws. Heathcliff, humiliated and offended by Catherine, mistreated by her brother Hindley, turns away from her.WhenHeathcliff gets rich again three years later, it's too late, Catherine is alreadymarried. Furious Heathcliff swears revenge. Hemarries Isabella Linton, Edgar's sister, to take control of the estate and destroy the family. Catherine, aware that she is the cause of so much suffering, falls ill and dies after giving birth to little Cathy. Desperate and inconsolable Heathcliff tries to take possession of everything that belonged to Catherine. When he is about to succeed, he dies and at his request is buried next to Catherine, so that nothing can separate them, on the edge of themoor, where they played as children. Life resumed in the house with themarriage betweenHareton, Hindley's son, and Cathy.
