EMILY BRONTE (1818-1848) BIOGRAPHY Emily (Jane) Bronte was born on 30 July 1818 in Bradford (Yorkshire). She was the fourth of 6 children of an Anglican curate. After the death of her mother they were brought up by their aunt. She studied in a school with 4 of her sisters but when 2 of them died there one year later, she returned to the family home in Haworth (Yorkshire). With her brother (Branwell) and her sisters (Anne and Charlotte) Emily invented and told stories. She studied in Brussels one year with her two sisters, when her aunt died she returned to Yorkshire. Emily and her sisters tried to found a school but failed. Emily and her sisters began to write poems. In 1846 Charlotte included some of them in a collection called Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell (pseudonyms used by the sisters to disguise their feminine identity: the work of women writers was not easily published at the time). In 1847 Emily's novel WUTHERING HEIGHTS was published. She died of tuberculosis on 19 December 1848, at the age of 30. Emily was a very reclusive and retiring person. She lived most of her life in her small village on the Yorkshire moors. She had a bond with this landscape and nature stimulated her imagination. As a novelist and poet she is considered the most talented of the three sisters. WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1847) PLOT A visitor in Yorkshire tells the story of 2 households on the Yorkshire moors: - Wuthering Heights (the home of the Earnshaws) - Thrushcross Grange (the home of the Lintons). 30 years earlier Mr Earnshaw finds a homeless gipsy-boy (Heathcliff) and adopts him. Mr Earnshaw’ son Hindley resents Heathcliff, but his sister Catherine grows attached to him. When Mr Earnshaw dies, Hindley sends Heathcliff to work in the fields. Hindley loves Catherine, but she marries the rich Edgar Linton from Thrushcross Grange. So Heathcliff runs away and returns rich to exact revenge on the families. Catherine dies and her ghost follows him; when he dies their ghosts walk together on the moor. The story has romantic and gothic elements such as strong passions, stormy natural settings, dreams and ghosts.
