Since before we can remember, our parents have cared for many of us, providing necessities like food, housing, and possibly even an education. As we get older, so do our parents. After a certain point, the roles reverse, and our parents are the ones who need our help and provision. Some people strongly agree that children should take care of their aging parents: to begin with, they gave us life, helped us to grow up and without them we would not be in this world. In addition, they provided shelter, clothes, and medicine whenever we needed at that time, as well as educating and teaching us on how we could survive in this world. Healthy parents always try to make their children happy and they want to see them become a successful person. On the other hand many children of elderly adults don’t live near their parents, so it’s not always possible to be a family caregiver, not to mention that everyone has varying relationships with their parents, to put it another way, children who grew up in an abusive household are more likely to cut ties with their parents when they grow up and move out, like in any relationship, boundaries are essential, and sometimes taking care of elderly parent is not in everyone’s best interests for various reasons. Another key point is the fact that elders are not granted with receiving a pension in all countries. In conclusion, I think that the person who is responsible for taking care of elderly parents doesn’t have to be their child, but at the same time it’s important to remember that parents deserve love and affection and if children can’t directly take care of their elder parents, they should at least provide the right amount of assistance with calls, text and also visits that could psychologically help the elder feel less lonely and abandoned by their own children.
