Roberti Louis Stevenson
His house is in Edinburg, he is Scottish and not
English. The house was boilt in 1804 in the
newest part of the town, in full Georgian age,
the style of the 19*" century in architecture is
classicism, it is in classical style and the
buildings were built in classical style.
Stevenson came alter to this house, he bought
it in 1857
His childhood: he was a very creative child.
And also e was a weak and ill boy, had a lot of
health problems and had a lot of nightmares
coming from the illness.
Another element which is important to
comprehend his literature is his nanny, who
told him bloody stories about the Scottish
history and ghost stories. He had a nanny like
all the children of his social class, he was rich.
She told him stories about murders, war etc,
with the fact that he had nightmares and the
fact that he was very imaginative .
He was really young when he started creating
stories. (creating as imagining and not writing)
There is an influence of Edinburg and Scotland
in his writing, which is really different from
England, they are not English and they have a
different culture, even if they do speak English
and they are now part of great Britain. They
are Celts and they were never conquered by
romans.
The city itself, like London, expressed the
aspect of the double: there was a neoclassical
part of the city, light open spaced and elegant,
and the old medieval part called shambles
(=vicoli) were all the poor people lived.
Jackill and Hyde represent the 2 sides of
Edinburg, it is a symbolic novel, there a lot of
symbols in the protagonists. the novel is set in
a city that looks like London but it is actually
about Edinburg the are both “double “ cities.
The victoria houses have 2sides too: the part
that faces the front of the house, light and
clean, and another entrance on the back, dirty,
dark, were the servants entranced. 2 doors:
one on the front light, and one on the back
dark, just like the city of London and the 2
sides of Edinburg.
The first of thing we think about is the contrast
between good and evil in the novel, but it is
not the only meaning, we can read the novel in
a deeper way: the evil does not care about the
good, but the good ultimately cares about the
evil. Which is why everything happens, beause
the good part cares about the actions of Hyde
and the good tries to win against the bad, it is
not just a fght, the good tries to erase the evil,
but the evil does not care about the good.
People are attracted by the fact that in
darkness there is always the light of the good,
the light that the goo can win., even if there is
