Balanced Essay Some educationalists argue that subjects such as music, drama, and art should be compulsory in the senior school curriculum. Others claim that they subtract precious time and resources from an already strained public education system. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Non-academic subjects, for example art, music and drama are generally considered as an important part of a student’s education. While some people agree with this statement, others believe that it is time to remove them from the school curriculum in order to give more space to other ones. As far as I am concerned, each of these subjects has a fundamental role in the public education system for different reasons based on different aspects. First of all, arts are an essential part of human culture: as a consequence, these subjects are at least as important as other traditional subjects such as history and literature. Secondly, drama and music could really make a positive difference in a teenager's educational development, as they are a great source of creativity and stimulation. Then, we should consider that not all students are inclined into scientific subjects, so it is important to include arts and others as an inspiration for those who desire to work in a cultural context, for instance museums or theatres. Despite these points, forcing teenagers to study these subjects implies some downsides. In fact, the actual public education system surely needs some renovation, including the introduction of subjects that could appear more appropriate to our contemporary world, such as computer science and related subjects. Furthermore, not all students can really benefit from studying humanistic subjects or simply appreciate it if they are not really interested. For this reason could be possible to make these subjects optional and let students develop their passions for arts or drama out of school. To conclude, the mandatory study of arts, drama and music has both advantages and disadvantages, but I believe that these subjects are still too important to be completely removed from the academic curriculum because this choice could prevent students from exploiting their positive sides in advance.
