It gives me great pleasure to give you my personal view on what has been the best performance of the year in my local area, which is Perugia. As the main town of Umbria, Perugia has not only become a melting pot or a university city where many foreign students decide to come to study every year, but also a place with lots of opportunities to go to readings, operas, musical and variety shows. Therefore, the decision was not easy. However, I settled for the musical event “Umbria jazz”. Umbria jazz is the most important Italian jazz music festival which was born in 1973 and takes place currently in Perugia. Since 2003 the most important concerts have been held at the Santa Giuliana arena, with names such as Ornette Coleman, Van Morrison, Bobby McFerrin etc. From the moment of its birth in 1973, Umbria Jazz was clearly different from the other Italian jazz festivals. While jazz was usually to be heard in small clubs and occasionally in theatres and concert halls, Umbria Jazz took the music into the historic town squares of Umbria to audiences of up to twenty thousand young people, and every concert was free. The music of the New World was performed in the setting of Umbria’s medieval towns and spectacular scenery, and it was this unusual combination which gave the Festival its special appeal. I consider the festival the best performance of the year because of the cast’s outstanding performance. If you are a fan of this kind of music this festival is a must. If you generally enjoy music and a jolly evening out, this is the performance to go to.
