Your college magazine has invited students to contribute a film review to a special feature entitled “Special effects: essential nowadays – or distracting?” Write a review of a film you have seen that uses special effects and say whether you think they are an important aspect of today’s films. What makes Quentin Tarantino’s movies so peculiar has something to do with the special effects involved in his films. The Kill Bill saga movies are among my favorite moving pictures by the American director. Both movies don’t really belong to a particular genre: most people would consider them action movies – with little regard to their satirical component, which in my opinion makes the plot that much more appealing. The lead character, played by an outstanding Uma Thurman, goes down an avenging path, after being almost killed by her former partners of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, led by her lover Bill. What makes it different than the average action movies is its grotesque plot, its satirical references to martial arts movies and the toughness and determination of The Bride. It’s reinvigorating to see a woman perform such a role for the first time, Uma Thurman gave her such a mysterious and strong aura - no one could’ve played the Bride better than her. Special effects play an important role in giving the movie its peculiar feeling, the intended exaggerations were brought on by those effects too. For example, during hand to hand fighting they underlined the satirical component of the movie. While some felt that these hyperboles were ridiculous, I enjoyed the reinvention of the action genre. The use of special effects is often criticized by the fans of old school cinema. Critics believe that the implementation of such changes alters the realness of the plot. On the contrary, I feel that these technologies, coupled with a great acting and a solid plot, can contribute to the making of an award winning movie. In conclusion, were it not for the marvelous use of special effects, these movies would’ve never been so successful and valid. The quality of special effects impacts the outcome of the movie, so implementing them in a picture can really bring it up a notch.
