Of course, the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn't only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word, which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself” G. Orwell, 1984 This quotation reminds us of the power and value of each single word. Discuss this issue in a 300-word essay considering the complexities and richness of a language, the cultural and social implications that it involves. Support your ideas by referring to your readings and/or to your personal experience. Essay In the given quotation G. Orwell expresses his thoughts on the usefulness of words in a language. Based on my personal experience, new words are very useful because thanks to the different kinds of words present in a language, people are able to express a larger spectrum of emotions and pinpoint the essence of their thought. Some of the complexes of a language consist in the use of borrowed words. Borrowings serve to enrich the language, as well as make it easier. For example, the word “login” in Russian would sound like “accounting record of the user”, which is unnecessarily long and might create difficulties for Russians to communicate outside Russia. Therefore to have universal words like “Internet”, “Password”, “Computer”, “Film”, “Music” etc is very useful for people to communicate about common themes even if they come from different places. However, it is important to underline that some languages have been under such a strong influence of the foreign language that they have started to lose their own linguistic identity. For instance, I can notice this tendency in the Kazakh language: once it was a very rich language but during the period of domination of the Soviet Union, Russian became the dominating language and as a consequence, a lot of Kazakh words have vanished. Therefore, as someone who doesn’t speak Kazakh at all, I can still understand their speech thanks to the presence of many Russian words. Honorifics is another interesting concept to look into. They are common for many Asian countries like Japan, Korea, and Thailand and are usually used to show respect through the speech to someone older or to indicate how close you are to someone. I get it that at first sight honorifics might seem quite useless and confusing, but by hearing a lot of Korean speech I realized that they sound cute and might fit really well in the list of the tools used by people to express themselves better. Personally speaking, it is also important to know more than one language. By learning a new language, one might get fascinated by new words or expressions that can’t be translated into the native language. For example, in Kazakh, the expression “I love you” is verbatim translated as “I see you really well”, which in my opinion transmits the message better: I see you for who you are, I see your soul and I love you. To sum up, all that has been said, words have a dramatic effect on how we interact with people and how decisions are taken. They can inspire or bring tears to people. These are the reasons why words are a powerful expression tool and in order to use this tool correctly, we should know multiple ways in which we can express ourselves the best.
