Pros and cons of not eating meat. Vegetarianism is a movement that advocates for living solely on vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes, and nuts. However, it involves other areas beyond nutrition, advocating for the exclusion of any product, and in some cases, the by-product of slaughter. This concept indeed is based on the belief that it is unethical and cruel to slaughter sentient beings endowed with emotions and social connections for food. Meat has been a dietary staple for centuries, however, its healthiness has been questioned. According to recent studies, eating meat can increase disease risk and provoke several chronic diseases, like cardiovascular disease, cholesterol, high blood pressure levels, and cancer. However, a vegetarian diet can meet protein requirements, provide all the essential amino acids as well as all the necessary vitamins, fats, and minerals. Several research studies have suggested that the vegetarian diet has the lowest impact on the planet, even compared to the popular Mediterranean diet. The livestock sector is the major contributor to climate change which increases greenhouse gasses by enteric fermentation, manure decomposition, and deforestation to make room for grazing animals and growing feed. Many meat-eaters claim processed vegetarian protein options such as soy and tofu can cause more greenhouse gas pollution than farming meat. However, if eating soy does not cause Amazon deforestation, its production does, meaning only 6% of the soy produced globally is for human food use, the remaining is for animal feed. In conclusion, adopting a vegetarian diet offers benefits on all fronts. Raising animals for food not only contributes to Earth’s damage - polluting its air and water - but eating animal’s flesh contributes to harm to humans just as well. Transformation of the industry could bring significant benefits in terms of improved public health, better animal welfare and the unique ability to tackle multiple environmental crises simultaneously.
