Write an essay on the proverb “in the country of the blind the one-eyed man is king”explaining the metaphorical meaning of blindness in the story. The proverb means that the person who has slightly more ability than the rest will rule. . Since the main character of the story has sight, one would expect that he possesses an advantage that the inhabitants of The Country of the Blind lack. The author, however, turns that concept upside down in his story. Nufiez' ability doesn't make him more superior, because the society that he comes in touch with no longer understand the value of sight. In my opinion, the author presents the theme of blindness to reflect on the concept of ability and disability. In the country of the blind, Nunez is considered “queer”: sight is therefore considered a disability. The blind people even have medical experts and scientists who diagnose Nunez's ability to see as a mental disorder. Besides ,blindness is presented as a good ability to have and does not prevent people from having a nice life. People in the country of the blind don't need it at all: they substitute the act of seeing by smelling and hearing. They're not ignorant: they have their own culture, philosophy and they constitute their language in a way that it would enable the continuation of the life style based on blindness. The theme of blindness also shows a certain irony, which derives from the contrast between the proverb and the story. Nunez sees himself as the “enlightened” individual, who has to bring his superior knowledge into the society and teach his ways. However, he slowly understands that this is impossible, and in the end he's the one ends who has to adapt to their ways. Blindness also represents the inability to adapt to new cultures. Both Nunez and the blind people are so so convinced of their own absolute truth that they are not even interested in new perspectives. When Nunez arrives at the village, he's frustrated because the blind people have no idea what he is talking about. At first glance, it just seems like they don't understand, but the reader is well aware that they are not even trying. Nunez behaves in the same way: when he arrives at the village, he clungs on the belief that he's superior to them, and is not willing to change in order to come close to the blind people.
