Studying abroad is an opened door for people who want to widen their view of the world by having direct contact with different cultures. Living in another country without any help from your family can be quite frightening but it will surely broaden your life experiences outside of your comfort zone. As a foreign student, you will be forced to adapt to a new lifestyle and overcome obstacles that you may have never thought about before, but this experience will help you gain maturity and understand what you would like to do in your life. It should not come as a surprise that the number of students studying outside of their home university has tripled in the past 25 years. Currently, there are more than 1 million international college students in the world. While studying abroad you will have the opportunity to expand your studying limits and develop the capacity to adapt to different situations. Moving to a new country, without the constant support of your family, will indeed be hard at first. You will doubt your choices and you may even consider going back home but you just wait a couple of days and you will have your mind blown by the amount of new interesting pieces of stuff that you will discover just by taking a stroll in your new city! You will learn a lot of different things, varying from new teaching methods to different perspectives on life. “At first I was bewildered, I didn’t know what to do and I thought that I had made a mistake. But then everything changed” says Marta, an Erasmus Student at the University of Helsinki. In her own studying abroad experience, she explains that in the beginning, she had some issues with the weather and the darkness which is peculiar of Finland, but after a few weeks, she felt so fond of everything that was around her. “I discovered a new feeling of love for everything that was around me, from a tree to my professor, everything or everyone was there for me, to enrich me as a person.” she continues. During our interview, Marta reveals that her family had some doubts about this whole experience. They were worried about her safety and well-being and were afraid that they did not have the means to support her on this journey in the other part of the world. Surely, this experience is not cheap. You will have to sustain yourself and pay for all your expenses, but with a bit of sacrifice, everything is possible. Evelina, another Erasmus Student at the University of Helsinki, says “Life can be quite expensive but if you truly put all your effort and sacrifice you can do it even if on a budget.” Studying abroad will deeply change you, refining your valuable skills for personal growth, including independence and adaptability, you will understand that by facing problems or challenges you can thrive and blossom.
