The Picture of Dorian Gray Nowadays, in a world where the population can easily reach the age of one hundred, more and more people are looking for the secret to eternal beauty. Aging, in fact, can be frustrating, above all when youth and beauty are often connected to success and active life. Oscar Wilde analyses this theme in The Picture of Dorian Gray, where Dorian, once he realises the power of his own beauty, would give anything to preserve it. We therefore wonder: why are people so attached to physical appearance?    First of all, society has always influenced the idea of beauty by imposing some standards which have a significant impact on humans’ life, especially on teenagers' development. In fact, people feel the pressure to fit in these canons in order to find their place in the community and to avoid social marginalisation.      Moreover, today, the impact of these standards has increased exponentially due to social media. Influencers flaunt their perfect bodies, exciting lives and successful working careers, making their followers feel inadequate to live in this world. This external pressure obviously leads to insecurities, one of the many is the fear of aging and losing beauty.    According to the conventions set during the Victorian age, beautiful people were automatically moral human beings, while ugliness was a synonym of immorality.  Nevertheless, all that glitters is not gold. A charming appearance can hide insecurities and mental problems: Dorian’s obsession with beauty, in fact, will lead him to kill himself, by hitting his portrait.    In conclusion, we can state that beauty standards will always evolve and trying to fit in them is not only impossible but also useless. For this reason, I think that people should put their mental health first and work on their inner qualities, rather than focusing on those unattainable and superficial canons. Only in this way people will understand the importance of inner beauty and they will finally stop judging and looking for validation.
