Nowadays the work industry is going through an extremely challenging period due to both the current pandemic of covid 19 and its pre existing problems. Regarding the latter, a common and quite unpleasant phenomenon is the long term unemployment among people in their fifties and sixties. The suggestions and possible solutions are many (retraining, early retirement, job sharing and so on), however this is a condition that is far from being solved. Firstly one of the most intuitive and apparently simple answers is an early retirement, which mainly consists of avoiding the problem rather than dealing with it. This method could actually benefit workers in countries such as Italy, where the age for retirement has increased in the past years, causing a lot of distress and difficulties. However, there is another aspect to consider: using italy as an example, introducing an early retirement would be impossible in the current economic state of the country, which is also the reason behind the past measures. In the end workers would find themselves with a low pension and the government would fall deeper into a crisis . Secondly another possibility is retraining. Living in a world where everything is constantly evolving and changing leads to the necessity of updating the workforce . Workers must keep up to the new applications of technology in their field, to the constant increment of information that often involve the scientific sphere ,to the various useful skills unknown to them and so forth. Yet it may not be enough. Years of experience are not synonymous with a secured job, nevertheless it is retraining. This method is obviously helpful and should be encouraged but its effectiveness is questionable. In conclusion there is no easy way out of this situation, a combined effort of the industries, the work class and the government is certainly required to seal towards a better future for everyone.
