During the Victorian Age novels became the most popular form of literature and the main form of entertainment because they were read aloud within the family. Fiction fluorished in this period for many reasons: we have better means of comunication or the invention of new printing machinery. Novels were first published in instalments in the pages of periodicals. In their works novelist described society as they saw it: they denounced the evils of their society, however their criticism was not radical. A great number of novels were written by women but some women used a male pseudonym because for a woman it wasn’t easy to publish books. Novels written by women were a realistic exploration of the daily lives and values of women within the family and the community. Also the majority of readers were women because they had more time than men to spend at home. Unlike the feminine writers, the feminists felt it a duty to write in defence of other women by beginning to openly expose their problem, including the sexual ones. An important writer of the period is Charlotte Brontë. She contributed to the development of Victorian fiction as she was the first to make the novel the vehicle of personal revelation. In fact, Charlotte, used her own experiencs,especially the ones she had in Brussels, when she fell in love with M.Héger although this love was impossible because he was married; this unhappy experience inspired her novels. Other writers before her had introduced women in love into their novels but Charlotte was the first
