THE VICTORIAN AGE The Victorian age was an era in which progress ,reforms and politicaly stability coexisted with poverty and injustice. The Factory act(1833) predicted the reduction of working hours.The poor Law Amendment Act (1834) consisted in the creation of workhouses, institutions where the poor received board and lodging in return for work. Life in the workhouse was appaling because they are characterized by squalor, disease and crime. The atmosphere was polluted and that caused a disastrous effect especially on children s̓ health. The poor wear uniforms because there is the concept of omologation. The idea behind the workhouses was the awareness of such a dreadful life would inspire the poor to try to improve their own condition. The Victorians promoted a code of values based on personal duty, hard work ,respectability and charity. These values were of equal application to all strata of society.
