It's evening. The room where she is situated is full of dusty. Eveline is tired and nostalgic. 3) • Eveline thinks about her childhood. • in the past, her father has a bad role, because he was violent with her. • the yellowing photograph and a broken harmonium. These objects share the dust that is in the room. • she feels frustrated by her shop's assistant job and she considers her superior abusive. • She has agreed to be Frank’s wife and to leave her home, because she wants leave her hard life. • Frank is her boyfriend and he is a sailor. • She remembers Frank’s courtship. • Eveline’s father quarreled with her boyfriend since he distrusted sailors. Because of that fight Eveline accepted to leave home and to go to Buenos Aires with Frank. Now they had to meet secretly. • The sound of the street organ reminds her of the night that her mother died and how her father had paid a street organ player to move off and how he had cursed all foreigners. • She sees her mother’s life as a life of commonplace sacrifices closing in final craziness. • Eveline is caught between past and future. • She must escape, because if she remains in Ireland she perceives only terror. • frank represents her rescue. *** 1) the sound of the street organ can be considered as the epiphany of this story; Eveline remembers her promise to her mother, so she understand that she can not leave her home.
