Reflect on it. Leaders are charismatic, which means they have charisma, the ability of fascinating, inspiring and engaging people; they are creative, they give birth to innovative ideas and products; they encourage their followers to pursue their objectives and they are often taken by their followers as models. Furthermore, they are respected and trusted, especially because of their resilience, since leaders have clear goals in their minds and they never ponder to give up in front of a problem. Yet every coin has two sides: being a leader is not easy at all. It is actually very challenging. First of all, leaders have to lead people who may be very diverse, and what could be right for one could not be for another or vice versa. People tend to have different ideas, values, personalities. Therefore, it might be very difficult to change leadership style according to the people you have to manage. Moreover, leaders might have to vary their leadership style according to the context they find themselves in, but the range of situations they could face is incredibly wide and unpredictable. Secondly, it is highly likely to make a mistake for which people could lose trust or belief in you. Leaders have to think about a thousand things at the same, so it is very easy to forget about something, to not give it appropriate importance, to take the wrong decision or to say an inappropriate word. If your followers do not recognize you as their leader, they will not listen to you anymore and you will lose your leader status. In addition to these difficulties, leaders might have to solve interpersonal problems that could arise between or among staff members. In such cases, one side could be disappointed by what the leader decides, and as a result it could lose confidence in the leader. Lastly, a leader needs to be always focused on his/her objective. He/she should have stamina, which means that a good leader never gets discouraged by problems that might arise, but he should always have his goals clear in mind. This is not easy, especially because a leader should not look worried, sad nor angry, or he/she could demotivate his/her followers or lose their trust. In conclusion, being a leader is both a huge responsibility and a great challenge; leaders’ traits make them look as “gods” who can do anything effortlessly, but they are actually human and as vulnerable as any other person. Therefore, if they commit some mistakes, their followers should understand and forgive them.
