FEMALE IMMIGRATION IN ITALY INTRODUCTION The woman, seen as the symbol of attachment of her own land, today lives on her skin the immigration journey. In the past, women moved only from father’s to husband’s home while today they decide alone to emigrate bringing their culture in other countries. Now these women must know how to face a lot of changes which hit their own identity. So at first, they live a psychological distress caused by distance from family and the difficulties of adaptation to a new reality. For this reason it’s important the role of social worker who helps this people to mediate their culture with the one of the host country. Phases of female immigration in Italy The increase of migration flows in Italy is a recent and important phenomenon. In the last years women are more numerous than men because, in our country, is required female figure for domestical assistance like “badante”. First foreign women arrived in Italy in the end of 60’s and most of them came from Somalia and Eritrea. They were followed by Philipines and Peruvian women in the 70’s. When they arrived in Italy, they tried to save their earned money to send it to their family or to ensure that their husband reach them in Italy. Laws about female immigration and family reunification in Italy are: n° 39 of 1990 and n° 40 of 1998. Those laws made possible to North-African women to came in Italy. In the 90’s arrived in Italy an high number of Chinese women who came from just for economical reason. Chinese community works in the field of restaurant and clothing. Then came also women from East-Europe who tried to find a job or marry an Italian man. • Analyze and find immigrant’s needs; • Project and realize roads of aid to promote social and economic immigrant’s autonomy; • Control the developments of interventions; • Create territorial networks between public and private institution to improve immigrant’s condition. Interview We interviewed two woman that lives in Catania’s province. They come from Romania and they are 39 and 46 years old. Our purpose is to highlight their experience, their ways of life, the visions and the relationship that they have with Italian society. • Luminique, know as Lumi, 46 years old, Romania. I: What’s your qualification? L: I have a certificate in industrial chemistry I: What’s your job? L: I’m a badante I: How long have you been in Italy? L: 8 years I: Are you married? L: No, my husband is dead I: So you came in Italy primarily to work… L: Yes, because my children attended the school and I had to work after my husband’s death I: Do you miss your country? L: I feel like if I was born here. I don’t’ born in Romania, because the stork has made a mistake. I: What are your memories about your country? L: I don’t have a good memory because when I was in Romania my husband was ill but here I found good friends. I: Do you feel accepted? L: yes, is the true. I: Have you been the feeling of being judges? L: It’s normal that people judge you when they don’t know you. I: What are the negative and positive aspects of your immigration? L: There aren’t negative aspects because I know many beautiful people and I have placed well in the job. I: Would you stay here? L: yes, but if God decides that I have to go to another country, I will accept this. I: Would you return in Romania? L: No! I feel at home here. • Olympia, 39 years old, Romania; I: What’s your job? O: I’m a badante. I: Are you married? O. yes, I am. I: Why did you came to Italy? O: Because, I need to work, to change my life and that of my family. I: Do you miss your country? O: Yes, I miss everything. When I think my country I want to cry. I: have you been the feeling of being judged? O: Yes of course! Because people think that I serve only to work. I: Do you feel accepted by the host community? O: Yes, the few people I know respect me and I respect them. I: What were the negative and positive aspects of your immigration? O: Sometimes I think that was better to remain in Romania, because I feel a foreign here. I: Would you return in Romania? O: yes , I would come back in Romania because I don’t feel well here.
