FRANKENSTEIN: Frankenstein was a very ambitious doctor that wants to create a human being by joining parts selected from dead bodies and then infuse the spark of life. The result of the experiment is ugly and revolting and when the doctor saw his creature he felt terrified and disgusted. → this creature/monster/ wretch/ dispais is inhuman because it has yellow skin through which one can see the muscles and arteries, hideous eyes and thin black lips; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of a pearly whiteness; watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same color as the dun-white sockets (orbite grigiastre); shrivelled complexion (pelle grinzosa). the choice of those colors recalls the death and the world of nature where there are some poisoned animals. → He wants to take revenge on his creator because he was an outcome of the society, and on his relatives, his girlfriend, walton. He kills because he is an OUTCAST because he is ugly and revolting and people are terrorised by him. → the story is inspired by a nightmare because she had lost her mother and her father remarried; this woman and her dad are the causes of Mary Shelley’s nightmare. She eloped (run away) with PERCEY SHELLEY (poet). They moved first to friends and then to Switzerland near lake Geneva near Byron’s rented villa, VILLA DIODATI. THEMES: The main themes are the overreacher (Walton and Dr Frankenstein), the double because the doctor and his creature are 2 parts of the same being and because the creature is the dark side of the doctor that is the good part of the soul and the usurpation of the female role because the creation of human beings becomes possible without the women. NARRATORS: the novel is told by different narrators, at first, Walton informs his sister, then, Frankenstein informs Walton, who informs his sister and finally the monster informs Frankenstein, who informs Walton, who informs his sister. ELIZABETH, MOTHER: Elizabeth is the girl who Frankenstein want to marry; he dreams about her. When he kisses her lips became black and she appears to die and change into his mother’s body; a shroud enveloped her form, and grave worms body crawls with worms. He wakes up, horrified, to find his creature holding up the bed curtains. The creature tries to communicate with him, but Frankenstein escapes and rushed downstairs into the courtyard. The doctor spends the night by walking up and down because of his great agitation. WALTON: is an explorer, he was an overricher because he wants to explore the north pole, where he meets Frankenstein. PROMETHEUS: was a giant who stole the fire from gods in order to give it to men. He challenged the gods and freed men from god’s power (he is an overreacher (overcome human limits)). He was punished for this reason so he was tied in a rock and a eagle went every day to eat his liver that grow again so his punishment is eternal.
