FRANKESTEIN Frankestein is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley that tells the story of Victor Frankestein, a young scientist who creates a hideous sapient creature in an scientific experiment, This novel is also infused with elements of Gothic novel and Romantic movement. CHARACTERS -the protagonist is Victor Frankestein . He is obsessed with scientific achievement and glory, which drives him to discover the secret of manifesting life. Victor creates an intelligent but grotesque monster, from whom he recoils in horror. He keeps his creation of the monster a secret,feeling guilty and ashamed as he realizes how helpless he is to prevent the monster from ruining his life and the lives of others. - the monster . The hideous creature created by Victor Frankestein. Shelley describes the monster as 8 foot tall and hideously ugly, but sensitive and emotional. The monster attempts to fit into human society but in vain, and this leads him to seek revenge against his creator, The creature is a complicated antagonist : he is a murder ,but he began his life as a compassionate, misunderstood soul searching for love. -Robert Walton : the Arctic seafarer whose letters opens and close Frankestein. He picks Victor up off the ice ,help him nurse back to healt and he hears Victor’s story. -Victor’s family :his parents,a little brother called William and an adopted sister called Elizabeth. Elizabeth is an orphan whom the Frankesteins adopt and William is Victor’s youngest brother, the monster kills him in order to hurt Victor for abandoning him. - Victor’s dearest friend is Henry who want to be a poet and love nature and beauty but the monster kills him in revenge. -Justine is the servant who nursed Victor’s mother. She is blamed end executed for William’s murder even though she is actually innocent. TIME The novel takes place at an unspecified time in the 18th century. PLACE The setting of the novel ranges all over Europe, emphasizing places with which Shelley herself was familiar :Italy ,Switzerland( where Mary Shelley was staying when she began writing the novel), Germany,France, England, Scotland, Ireland and even the Artic. ACTION Robert Walton, the captain of a ship bound for the North Pole, writes a letter to his sister in which he says that his crew members recently discovered a man adrift at sea. The man,Victor Frankestein, offered to tell Walton his story. Frankenstein has a perfect childhood in Switzerland, with a loving family that even adopted orphans in need, including Elizabeth. Victor also has a caring best friend,Henry. Just before Victor turns seventeen and goes to study at the University at Ingoldstadt, his mother dies of scarlet fever. At Ingolstadt, Victor dives into "natural philosophy" with a passion, studying the secrets of life and suddenly, one night,he discovers the secret of life. With visions of creating a new and noble race, Victor puts his knowledge to work. But when he animates his first creature, its appearance is so horrifying that he abandons it. Victor hopes he monster has disappeared for ever, but some months later he receives the news that his youngest brother, William, has been murdered.Victor decides to visit the place where William had died and he sees the gigantic figure of the monster but he is afraid that no one will believe him and so he keeps silent. Justine ,another adoptee in his family, has been falsely accused. One day, while Victor is sitting on a rock to rest, the monster appears and ask his creator to listen to his story of unhappiness.
