There was a legend, which startes in Germany, the legend of Faust. He was a man who wanted to have totalknowledge, to get this he sold his soul to the devil. Maybe Doctor Frankenstein is simulating this man. 1. quest for forbidden knowledge = desire to know everything 2. overreacher = someone who wants to go over the limits. Walton is an overreacher on the geographic level, and Frankenstein on the scientific level. 3. double: with mary shelley we start to approach this theme. She realises that men have this double nature. She represent the two elements in 2 different character: the monster is the bad side. Victor Frankestein is a Gothic character because he gave life to a new creature, like a God, he wanted to go over the human limits, and become a life God. Terror has its routs on Mary Shelly'personal life. She was 18 when she wrote Frankestein. She was 16 when she got pregnant for the first time, but she lost the baby.
