Frankenstein Title: “Frankenstein” Author: Mary Shelley Characters: Victor Frankenstein The Monster Robert Walton Victor’s father Elizabeth Lavenza Henry Clerval William Frankenstein Justine Moritz Caroline Beaufort Caroline’s father Peasants Mr Waldman Mr Krempe Mr Kirwin Plot: Robert Walton writes to his sister Margaret and tells her, in a series of letters, how are going his voyages and his missions towards unexplored regions of North Pole, with resolved determination. But, after having had an accident, he and his men can behold only plans of ice all around them and glimpse a gigantic figure. After this event, they encounter an European who is in a wretched condition and who has been travelling on a sledge: he explains to them that he is pursuing a man who fled from him; on those following days, he promises that he will commence to tell his narrative. This man is Victor Frankenstein: he spends his childhood in Geneva, with the companionship of Elizabeth Lavenza, an orphan child he uses to cherish and protect. In the meantime, two brothers come into existence and Victor grows his friendship also with Henry Clerval. Soon, his desire to learn and his predilection for the sciences and for natural philosophy is evident and he carries on a multifarious knowledge, with mathematics’ studies. One day, his mother fells ill and, after having spoken with his relatives, dies calmly, leaving a great sorrow in them. Notwithstanding, he decides to go to university, departing for Ingolstadt. There, he can study chemistry and natural philosophy and his desire to discover the secret of life grows up. After a great deal of improvements and progresses in his studies, he begins the creation of a human being: although this work is almost loathsome, it is irresistible upon his imagination. Even if he has been always feverish, during this employment, he decides to complete and to accomplish his work, giving life to his creature. However, after having worked for two years, that causes disgust and horror in him. That night he doesn’t sleep calmly, because of his dreaming the miserable monster; he runs away to the street of the town, though it is raining: he meets his friend Henry Clerval, who has to study there, and after few days he commences to have a nervous fever. Thanks to his friend’s cures and attentions he recovers and improves his health, but soon he receives a letter from his father: reading it quickly, he discovers that his younger brother William has been murdered. Hurrying up for coming back home, in an enormous grief, he stops at the spot where his brother has been killed and sees the daemon to whom he has given life: immediately, he understands that creature has been the murderer. In Geneva, he finds out that the blame is fallen on Justine Moritz, a young lady, adopted by their family; after the trial, she is condemned and executed, therefore she dies as a murderess: William and Justine are the first hapless victims of the monstrous creature and Victor is in anguish, because a sense of remorse afflicts him. Afterwards, he leaves home towards the Alpine valleys, where a breath-taking landscape surrounds him: there, he meets the monster who begins the tale of his life. Initially, he has sheltered in the forest near Ingolstadt, where he has found a small hut; then, he has arrived at a village, but people has always attacked him, therefore he has constructed a place of refuge. With the passing of time, living secretly next to De Lacey poor family, he has become acquainted with their lessons and speeches; one day, he has wanted to be known by them: in fact, he has introduced himself into their cottage and he has spoken with the old blind man, who has seemed to be sincere: but, as soon as the young boys have arrived and have seen the monster into their cottage, they have been frightened by his aspect and countenance and he has escaped to his hovel. A night of destruction has occurred for him, and an eternal hatred to all mankind has begun with an “everlasting war”. Going to Geneva, he has saved a girl who was drowning but a gun has been pointed against him; there, he has met an unprejudiced child: he has decided him to be his first victim, only to injure his creator, Victor. Now, the only thing he desires is to have a female being, hideous as himself, that Victor should create: even if, at first, he is bewildered, finally, he decides to agree, hoping that he will be kind forever. Later, he wants to depart to England, and his companion Clerval accompanies him during that journey. There, he starts to pick some materials for that new creature. Going to Scotland to live alone for some days, while his labour is advancing, some doubts grow up in his mind and resolves to destroy that new creature: the monster, who has followed him, threatens him that on his wedding night he would arrive and commit something painful; but Victor has been resolved and determined not to destroy his family and other human beings with his monsters. That night, he takes a boat out onto a lake but, unfortunately, a strong wind does not allow him to come back and the following morning he finds out of being on the shore of a land, near an inhabited town. There, he is acquainted that he has to give an account of himself and to afford a trial for the death of a gentleman, and he is guilty, for all the witnesses. When he can see the corpse, he notes that it is the lifeless form of Henry Clerval, with a monster’s print on the neck: he is now doomed and he is locked into a prison, where he grows feverish. After having recovered and being acquitted and liberated, he sails from the Irish shores and returns to Geneva, with his father. Then, Victor
