It was published anonymously in 1818 and modified by the author for a second edition in 1831. It is narrated in the first person by three different narrators. It starts as an epistolary novel in which an English explorer called Walton, describes his experiences in the Arctic to his sister. The man tells her about his meeting with the scientist Frankestein, a man who wanted to create a human being but create a monster and now, unpleasantly, he pursues it. He created it using different parts of dead bodies. The narration contains an introduction in which the scientist explains the experiment of the creation and then the displeasure that makes the monster escape. In this part there is a long report by the creature himself that explains its experience with the humankind that sees it only as an object of terror. The pursuit ends with his creator's death and his own suicide. PLOT The monster finds himself in a deep wood while he's continuing his joumey. In this place he feels emotions which have for a long time disappeared and he forgets his solitude and deformity daring to be happy. Walking, he comes to the boundary, bordered by a river and he hesitates to take the path because he doesn't know which one is correct. Here, a few moments later, he hears the sound of human voices and he hides behind a tree. Afterwards, a young girl comes running and falls into a rapid stream. The monster saves her from the current of the river but as soon as a man sees him, he starts pulling the girl violently away from his arms. Suddenly, the man shattered the monster. WHY 1S IT CONSIDERED A GOTHIC NOVEL? This novel may be said to belong to the gothic tradition of fiction, even if it differs from it in some important respects. Frankenstein is not set in a Gothic castle and it doesn't deal with supematural events. It deals with a scientific experiment and the horror derived from the unexpected outcome. The Gothic element can be found in the description of the monster and his reactions to his creator. WHY IS IT A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL? It includes themes such as the possibilities and limits of scientific research, and the danger implicit in any attempt to go beyond those limits. Because of the presence of these elements, Frankenstein can be considered also the first work of science fiction. Romantic elements: appear when Shelley incorporates the imagery of nature. The pleasant aspects related to nature are emphasized, the natural elements create a positive feeling, indeed the description of nature is positive. There is a harmonious connection between the peaceful setting and the positive feelings of the monster. The day is rising and also the monster feels gentleness and happiness. He is gentle and pleasant because he's experiencing emotions he has never felt before. LAST LINES The harmonious atmosphere is destroyed by the injustice of the behaviour of men to the monster, indeed the tone conceming the last lines is increasingly stronger and it seems to look almost cruel and brutal. These aspects contribute to underline the disgust and the disappointment towards mankind and all the injustices that happened to him. The monster is now full of hate and harshness, he is mad and wants revenge because he is so painful.
