WALTON’S NARRATIVE - Epistolary novels: letters between Robert Walton and Margaret Saville - Walton might find a passage to the East that will help our traders, or perhaps he will discover something useful to science: in two weeks he will go to Archangel to hire a ship and a crew (brave and diligent), and in june they will sail north - he tells Mrs Savile about the strange thing that has happened: they were surrounded by ice and far from land. Suddenly they saw a sledge, pulled by dogs going north and driven by a gigantic man (“the devil”). Then the ice broke and the next morning they found another sledge with a man that was weak, tired, and half-frozen. They invited him onto the ship. He was following someone. - Walton continue the letter as a journal: ● The man’s name is Victor Frankenstein. Walton admire him and pity him. He spends all his time on the deck, watching for the other sledge. FRANKENSTEIN’S NARRATIVE - He was born in Geneva and he had a little brother called William and an adopted sister called Elizabeth (gentle, beautiful, with golden hair and blue eyes) - He had a friend called Henry Clerval that want to be a poet - Frankenstein was interested in science and scientific discovery: ● Elizabeth became ill with scarlet fever and their mother nursed her and remained ill. When she was dying, she called Frankenstein and Elizabeth to her beside and said “dear children, your father and I hope that one day you two will marry. Be happy and take care of William” ● a few weeks later he went to the university in Ingolstadt, but he felt lonely and disappointed ● then he went to hear a lecture by Mr Waldman, the professor of chemistry / F. left the lecture full of ambition: interested in the human body, he examined the change from life to death and from death to life - Knowledge is dangerous: an ambition man is not a happy man His first task was to create a body, exploring dead bodies and living animals. He worked in a lonely attic. With trembling hands he gathered his instruments to give life to the dead thing that lay at his feet. He saw the yellow eyes of the creature open. He has yellow and wrinkled skin, long and black hair, watery eyes. The next day, F. walked the street of Ingolstadt and saw Henry Clerval. Together they read poetry and studied Oriental languages . One day, he returned to a walk and found a letter from Frankenstein’s father, waiting for him. FRANKENSTEIN’S NARRATIVE THE LETTER FROM THE FATHER: was about William’s muder - One day Elizabeth, William and the father went for a walk and Willian ran o to play. At the end, Elizabeth found him dead. The marks of the murderer’s fingers were on his neck. Elizabeth had given William a locket on a chain with a picture of his mother inside, and the jewel now was gone. - F. immediately left for Geneva, but he decided to visit the place where William had died and spend the night in a nearby village. There was a thunderstorm and he watched the lightning over Mont Blanc. Suddenly he saw a gigantic figure - Justine has been arrested for the murder of William: one of the servants, taking justine’s clothes to be washed, found something in her pocket. It was the locket. She told her story to the court, but they don’t believe her. Justine was found guilty of the murder. The next day she was hanged. “I should be your Adam, but instead I am your Satan” ● Adam is the first man that God creates ● When Adam is created, he is beautiful and innocent: he doesn't know what sin is ● Soon after creating Adam, God creates a woman, Eve, to be Adam’s wife ● After being sent down to Hell, Satan devotes himself to trying to get revenge - The creature took F. across the ice to a small hut. Inside, he lit a fire and began his tale THE CREATURE’S NARRATIVE - He felt, saw, heard and smelt: he took F. coat and walk into the forest of Ingolstadt until a river, when he ate berries and drank water’s river - SOUNDS: came from the birds that flew across the light - He saw a small hut and he entered in: inside was an old man, preparing some food over a fire - At sunset he arrived in a village: he admired the huts and the cottages and saw milk and cheese through the windows of the cottages. When the villagers saw him, they came running. The creature hid himself in a small hut beside a cottage, bare and uncomfortable. - He looking out through a crack in the wooden wall - the old man was blind Word that the creature learned: fire, food, milk, wood, sister (Agata), brother (Felix), son, father - He wanted to learn to read the signs: he thinks that maybe his words could win their sympathy, despite his monstrous appearance One day a young lady arrived at the cottage. Felix’s expression changed from sadness to great joy. She was very beautiful, with dark hair and eyes. Felix called her his “sweet Arabian”. The cottager teached her their language. Her name was Safie. The creature and Safie learned to read and speak by a book. The book spoke a little about the histories, governments, customs, and religions of manuìy dierent countries. The creature heard of the Greeks and early Romans, but also heard of the decline of the Roman Empire, chivalry, Christianity and kings. He heard of the discovery of America and of the sad fate of the American Indians. He learned of the division of property, the rich and the poor and of aristocratic families. - his sadness grew with his knowledge THE CREATURE’S NARRATIVE THE HISTORY OF THE COTTAGERS: - the old man’s name was De Lacey: a frenchman of good family - Safie’s father was a Turkish merchant, put in prison by the French government. Felix was present in the court when the Turk was condemned to death. Felix decided to help the man to escape and when saw Safie, he fall in love with her Safie is an adopted member of the De Lacey family who came to be in a rather peculiar way. She is the daughter of a once enslaved Christian Arab woman and a Turkish merchant. Her mother, born in freedom, taught Safie to be a Christian and to want more liberty that Muslim women are allowed. Safie wanted to marry a Christian and live in a Christian country. Old De Lacey and Agatha had been arrested and put in prison for helping the Turk to escape. Felix, the Turk and Safie left France and travelled through Italy. Felix returned immediately to Paris and Safie remained in a convent. Felix and his family were put on a trial and found guilty. They lost their fortune and were exiled from France. The Turk had not kept his promise. In the end Safie sold her jewels and travelled with a servant to Germany to find Felix and his family. One night he found a bag full of books. As he read in THE SORROWS OF WERTHER, he thought of my own feelings and condition. His body was gigantic and ugly. PLUTARCH’S LIVES taught him to love
