MARY SHELLEY: FRANKENSTEIN 1818 THE STORY: Doctor Victor Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist, tries to create a human being by joining parts selected from corpses. Despite careful preparation, the result of the experiment is ugly and revolting. The monster becomes a murderer, and in the end he destroys his creator. The story is not told chronologically and is introduced to us by letters written by Waltor, a young explorer on a voyage of expedition to the North Pole, to his sister, Margaret Saville. THE INFLUENCE OF SCIENCE: - she was torn between the fear of revolution and interest in revolutionary ideas - she and Percy Bysshe were interested in science and chemistry and they were aware of the latest scientific theories and experiments of these days, like evolutionism + Galvani → scientists are responsible for what they create… but dr. Frankenstein escaped → create a human being without respecting the rules of nature as far as creation and life are concerned + goes against God (the only one who can create life): over reacher titan LITERARY INFLUENCE: 1) Rousseau’s natural man, in a primitive state, not influenced by civilization. He discovers rapidly the limitations in both states 2) The myth of Prometheus: giant who stole fire from the gods in order to give it to man. He challenged the divine authority and freed men from the gods’ power→ overreacher THEMES: ● social prejudices: the figure of the monster as an outcast ● the usurpation of the female role since the creation of human beings becomes possible without the participation of women ● the quest for forbidden knowledge ● the overreacher (someone who does not respect the boundaries) ● the penetration of nature’s secrets ● the double THE CREATION OF THE MONSTER page 109 Dr Frankenstein is in the German town of Ingolstadt and he’s doing some research on human physiology in the local university laboratory.
