SUMMARY OF FRANKENSTEIN BY MARY SHELLEY Frankenstein is an epistolary novel infact the story is told through the letters that Captain Robert Walton writes to his sister, Margherita, to tell her about his mission to the North Pole. When Walton and his sailors arrive in the highest part of Russia/reach the highest part of Russia their ship is ice-bound and they spot, in the fog, a gigantic figure, on a dog-sled, crossing the ice. The following morning, they continue their journey and they see the same sled of the previous day with a man in poor health so they invite him onto the boat. Robert immediately establishes a friendship with the man and the latter tells him his story: his name is Victor Frankenstein and he was there because he was looking for a fugitive. Frankenstein grew up in a rich Swiss family with his mother Caroline, his father Alphonse, his young brothers Ernest and William, his adopted cousin Elizabeth and his friend Henry Clerval. Encouraged by his family, he studies chemistry and natural philosophy and he enrolls at the University of Ingolstadt until the day when his mother dies of scarlet fever. After her death, Victor is obsessed with the utopia of giving life to inanimate matter to the point that he tries to create a living being assembled with body parts from corpses, which he studies at night searching among the graves. One night, finally, the creature comes to life but, when he sees the monster move, Frankenstein flees terrified. The monster takes Victor’s diary and he also escapes. Shortly after he falls ill and after a four-month recovery, he returns home because of the murder of his brother William. Justine Moritz, the housekeeper, is convicted of the crime after William’s locket is found in her pocket but, Victor believes that it was the monster killed his brother. The man, thus, retreats to the mountain, where he finds the monster who pleads guilty for the murder of Victor’s brother and tells him about his story. After confiding the sense of inadequacy to Frankenstein, the monster makes a request to the doctor: to assemble a woman like him so as not to suffer loneliness and have someone to share his life with. Victor accept his request and he moves to the Orkney Islands, secretly followed by the monster, with the plan to create a new being; Frankenstein decide di accontentare il mostro si sposta allora alle isole Orcadi, seguito di nascosto dal mostro, con il progetto di creare un nuovo essere; tuttavia, angosciato dalle possibili conseguenze di mettere al mondo un altro mostro, pari al primo per forza e violenza, distrugge l’opera quand’essa è ancora incompiuta. Frankenstein decides to please the monster then moves however, distressed by the possible consequences of bringing another monster into the world, equal to the first by force and violence, destroys the work when it is still unfinished. The creature then swears vengeance, promising to consume her on her wedding night. Victor accetta
