Plot: Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist, manages to create a human being by joining parts selected from corpses. The result of the experiment is ugly and revolting: the Monster becomes a murderer and in the end he destroys his creator. The story is introduced to us by a series of letters, written by Walton, a younger explorer on a voyage to the North Pole. 2. In the introduction to the novel, Shelley gives her own account of Frankenstein’s origin. 3. Shelley dedicated Frankenstein to Godwin, using her parents ideas. She likes the monster but she’s afraid of him because she doesn’t know what he could do. 4. Important influences are Rousseau and the Romantic poets in general, most of all to the “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. The myth of Prometheus is important too, because he was a giant who stole fire to Gods, to give it to humanity. So, we can find the intent to challenge the divine authority and to overreach the humans limits. 5. The themes are: the quest for forbidden knowledge; the penetration of Nature’s secrets; the double, the Doctor and the Monster; the usurpation of the female role; social prejudices through the figure of the Monster as an outcast; education and experience.
