In 1154 the throne passed to HENRY PLANTAGENET known as Henry II of Anjou. Henry II was a strong king and he also remembered for his struggle with the power of the Church and for his quarrel with Thomas Becket, the Archibishop of Canterbury, in fact Henry II was probably the responsible for Becket’s murder. RICHARD THE LIONHEART. Henry II was succeeded by his son Richerd in 1189. The new king was known as Richard the Lionheart for his bravery and military abilities. But King Richard spent the most part of his reign on crusade in Palestine and fighting in France. During Richard’s absence his younger brother JHON reigned in his stead. Prince John was unpopular king. Much later folklore linked King Richard to ROBIN HOOD and this legend was developed by SIR WALTER SCOTT in his novel IVANHOE. On the death of King Richard in 1199, John became king. KING JOHN AND THE MAGNA CARTA. Angered by Johns oppressive reign, by his loss of French territories and by the pressure of taxes imposed to pay Johns’s expedition, the barons rebelled against the king. In 1215 they forced the king to sign THE MAGNA CARTA at Runnymade (near London). This important document established freedom under the law for all men (except serfs) and declared that the king himself was subject to the law. THE BLACK DEATH .The year 1348 was remembered for THE BLACK DEATH, a plague which swept across Europe and reached England: nearly half of the English population died. THE WAR OF THE ROSES. Between 1455 and 1485 British politics was characterized by the quarrelling between two branches of the Plantagenet royal family, the HOUSE OF YORK and the HOUSE OF LANCASTER. This 30-year dynastic struggle was known as THE WAR OF THE ROSES, because the white rose was the symbol of the house of York and the red rose the symbol of the house of Lancaster. The conflict came to the end with the battle of Bosworth Field, where Henry Tudor of Lancaster defeated the last of the York king Richard III. HENRY VII became the first Tudor king, The new Tudor dynasy marked the end of the medieval period.
