GEORGE GORDON BYRON (1788-1824) LIFE • Byron was born in 1788 • He was un inconventional aristocrat • He had a handicap, a deformed foot • In 1809 he set out on a tour of Spain, Portugal, Malta, Albania, Greece and the Middle East. • After his return to England, he published the first ‘two cantos’ of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. • He became a literary and social celebrity but then he left England in 1816, never to return. • He lived in Geneva where he became a close friend of Percy Bysshe Shelley • Then he moved to Venice, where he produced the tragedy Manfred and he began his masterpiece, the mock-epic Don Juan. • He died in Missolonghi in 1824 NATURE  For Byron nature is not a source of consolation and joy  Is used as a «background»  Is the companian of the solitude BYRON’S INDIVIDUALISM • He believed in individual liberty • He hated any sort of constraint • He denounced the evils of society by using satire STYLE • His style is influenced by Neoclassical poetry but he continued to refer to the 18° century poetic dictions • He used an elevated style • He used a witty style MANFRED • It’s a tragedy • It’s a closet drama SETTING • Alps - Manfred’s castle – mountains • Midnight The hero perfectly embodies the byronic hero Manfred’s lonely tower becomes the symbol of the overreacher
