In the first part, we are introduced to the gradgrind family and their rigid education. In the second part, we witness the unhappy marriage of louisa to a rich banker. HARD TIMES This novel is set in an imaginary industrial town named Coketown, a small industrial city. Main character: Thomas Gradgrind, an educator who believes in facts and statistics has founded a school where his theories are taught, and he brings up his two children, Louisa and Tom, in the same way, repressing their imagination and feelings. Both the children are unhappy infact the father marries his daughter with a rich banker of the city (30 years older than she is). This novel reflect the idea of society based in facts. The story can be divided in 3 parts: 1°book: “sowing”, there is the description of the family and the education 2° book: “reaping”, show the unhappy marriage of Louisa 3° book: “garnering” gives details TEXT “NOTHING BUT FACTS Describe his philosophy of life and the physical description. Only the facts are important for life. TEXT COKETOWN Monotonous town, dirty, everything is similar one to the others and the houses are all built up with red print including the differents churches. Are differents but are built as the same way, are igual. Describe the people that walk in a same tabular statement, each of them walks in the streets.
