JOSEPH CONRAD’S LIFE Joseph Conrad was born in 1857 near Berdichev, Poland. At the age of 16 and for the next four years Conrad worked on French ships. In 1886 he became a master mariner in the British merchant service. From the 1890 he travelled widely, mostly in the Far East and in Africa. In 1894 he started writing and his experiences, in particular in the Malay Arcipelago and in Africa, are reflected in his works. In 1924 Conrad died in kent, in South-East England. HEART OF DARKNESS The novella “Heart of Darkness” was written in 1902. Heart of darkness begings on a boat on the River Thamesas Marlow, the narrator, tells the story of the river journey he once made into the depths of the Belgian Congo to rescue an ivory trader who had disappeared. Marlow is employed by a belgian company to go to the Congo on a steamer. He is horrified by the greed of the ivory traders and by the way they exploit the indigenous people. At a company station, he hears somethings about Mr. Kurtz, reputed to be the company’s best agent. Marlow learns that Kurtz has been taken ill and other ivory agents, who are jealous of his success, hope he doesn’t recover. After much delay, Marlow finally sets off on the final part of his journey to Kurtz’s station. Arriving at his destination, he discovers that Kurtz’s base is a place of atrocity.
