His style is brief and seemingly straightforward. WWI ambulance driver and moved to Paris. In 1929 A farewell to arms (his world war one experience) Life was stormy, married a woman and fell in love with another one (married 4 times). Pulitzer prize in 1951 with “The old man and the sea” Depression, anxiety, mental illness, alcoholism→ committed suicide. 2nd july 1961. Modernism Radical shift in aesthetic and cultural sensibilities in the art and literature of the early 20th century. - distinctive break with Victorian morality; - pessimistic picture of a society in decay (confusion); - despair results in apathy and moral relativism. Industrialization, rapid growth of cities, horrors of 2 WWs, class and race struggles. → led to MODERNISM (1890-1950)= loss in faith, governments and human goodness→ main focus in the individual. Characteristics→ disruption of linear flow of narrative and focus on individual consciousness rather than narrative introspection. → language is central to artistic exploration → focus on alienation and confusion → interest in rhythm and fragments of “everyday” language → use of symbolism and setting STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS→ a narrative device which expresses thought process, jumps in though and lacks punctuation. Interior monologue→ organized presentation of rational thoughts (similar to stream of c. but doesn’t mix thoughts with impressions and perceptions and doesn’t necessarily violate grammar or logic. James Joyce Dublin 1882, met Nora Barnacle. 1905 settled in Trieste made friends with Italo Svevo. Financial problems. 1915 in Zurich Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist alleviate his financial difficulties. 1917 anonymous donations continued writing Ulysses. Then moved to Paris. The final decade of Joyce’s life darkened by his daughter’s illness, blindness increasing and father’s death. Again Zurich 1940, died january 1941. Style→ artist’s task was to render life objectively. different points of view and narrative techniques, use of free direct speech and interior monologue. Dubliners 15 short stories, DUblin is a place where true feeling and compassion for others do not exist. Divided in 4 parts: Childhood, Adolescence, Maturity, Public Life. The USA in the first half of the 20th century End 19th richest of world. Economic power→ agriculture, industries, mineral resources. Economic boom not prevented spread of poverty→ workers in dirty, overcrowded slums. poverty and corruption in government→ in books and articles by muckrakers 26th President Theodore Roosevelt. imperial expansion. isolationism WWI then in 1917 entered. the 1920s high confidence economy grew. → Roaring Twenties Red Scare and prohibition
