HOW TO LIVE 101 The video I would like to present to the class focuses on the theme of longevity. It shows 3 different places: 1. The remote island of Okinawa in Japan 2. The village of Ovodda in the mountains of central Sardinia 3. The small town of Loma Linda in the Californian coast If you want to live longer, you may have a look at these places, where the oldest people on earth live. A team of scientists has tried to uncover their secrets and BBC HORIZON has travelled the globe to meet people who can show to improve our quality of live and how to live longer and healthier lives. OKINAWA Home of the one of the oldest community on Earth. In a population of 1 million inhabitants, 90 % are centenarians. The video shows Mr. Miyagi (aged 102) who has found his own way to defend age process. Since 1970 scientists tried to discover how can Okinawa’s people keep so successfully their longevity and they find out unbelievable results. According to the researches, DHEA is the gene of longevity and it’s responsible of the clock of Okinawa’s people. It’s remarkable that their ID card says they’re 90 years old but their body (physical appearance) looks younger. Experts highlight lowest livel of cancer and heart disease, furhermore ther’s a small percent of heart attacks (a few cases). The secrets of longevity begins from the table. Anti-oxydant fruit and vegetables Soy protein like tofu A local product so called Bani Imo (which tastes like sweet potatoe) These all take part in Okinawan’s rainbow and healthy diet. Okinawans have developped their own cultural food habits. The ability to trick starvation make Okinawans’ body physiologycally looks so young and this is in strong contrast with West’s food habits. The West is too much focus on earning from food (All You Can Eat Restaurants). In a typical day an Okinawan inhabitant consumes 20% less than in UK or USA, this avoids a phenomenon called clarck costriction. SARDINIA Miles away from Okinawa, in another island Sardinia, we can find the village of Ovodda with 1600 inhabitants. Here live Alessandro Vacca. His relatives can compete with the title of the oldest people in the world. Vacca’s family is very big and love sharing full meal all together around the table. They don’t count calories and surely they’re not vegetarian. In this family there are 5 centenarians, Alessandro’s aunt Maria has just turned 104. Professor Luca Deiana tried to find out the reasons who explain this phenomanon. He underlines the importance of Mediterrean Diet (UNESCO Inheritage) and climate. In the last decade he testified lots of Sardinian centenarians. This long-lived family makes Sardinia unique and rappresents a challenge for Deiana’s studies.
