Environmental crimes pose a grave threat to our everyday lives, our planet and to future generations. Borders do not restrict environmental crimes, which range from ivory trafficking and overfishing of protected species, to illegal logging and the dumping of hazardous waste. The same routes used to smuggle wildlife across countries and continents are often used to traffic weapons, drugs and people. Indeed, environmental crime often occurs hand in hand with other offences such as passport fraud, corruption, money laundering and even murder. Unlike the illegal trade in drugs and other illicit goods, natural resources are finite and cannot be replenished in a lab. As such, there is a sense of urgency to combat environmental crime. As to their causes I would first of all state that environmental crimes are widely recognized as one of the most profitable forms of transnational criminal activity. Beyond the immediate impacts on the environment, the illegal trade in natural resources is depriving developing economies of billions of dollars in lost revenue just to line the pockets of criminals. Sustainable development, livelihoods, good governance and the rule of law are all under threat, as large sums of money are flowing to militias and terrorist groups. I live in Calabria and my region combines the great beauty of its sea and coasts with unsustainable situations relating to purification, illegal construction and poor management of the waste cycle. I think it is necessary for the EU to take measures to combat criminal networks involved in all forms of environmental crime, including by introducing rules on waste management and trade in wildlife. The rules on criminal protection of the environment need to be strengthened. Law enforcement and customs authorities from all EU countries, EU institutions, agencies and bodies, as well as partner countries and organisations, must work together even more to combat this form of crime through investigations, seizures and other police operations.
