PAGE 258 ex 7 COMPARATIVE FORMS We can put "much", "far", "a lot" etc before the comparative to make the difference between the two things more precise: - The book was much more interesting than the film version. - The test was far easier than I had imagined. To emphasize a small difference we use "slightly", "a little", etc - Today is a little warmer than yesterday. - My headache is slightly better than it was. NB: The superlative form "by far" - That was by far the best meal that I have eaten in ages. THE DOUBLE COMPARATIVE short adjectives add "er": - hotter and hotter two syllable adjectives ending in "y" change like this: - prettier and prettier other adjectives make the double comparative in this way: - more and more interesting NB: - The more you practise, the easier it gets. - The longer he waited, the more impatient he became. NB: the sooner the better / the more the better NB: mixed double comparative: - the hotter the weather, the less I want to work.
