He studied at languages school, and as an adult he left Dublin at the age of 22 and traveled to Paris, Rome, and finally settled in Trieste, where he met Italo Svevo. He married Nora Barnacle. In Trieste he wrote Dubliners, and he started having success as a writer. Later he moved to Zurich where he wrote Ulysses. He had many financial problems and troubles with publishers who considered its works as obscene. He died in Switzerland in 1941. His main works are: Chamber Music, Dubliners, A portrait of the Artist as a young man and Ulysses. STYLE Joyce believed in the impersonality of the artist. He had to render life objectively in order to give a true image of it, so the artist was detached from society, and his works did not have to express his point of view. His style is characterized by the interior monologue with two levels of narrations, used to give a realistic form to the characters’ thoughts. Language is complex, and made of infinite successions of words without grammar or punctuation. DUBLINERS Dubliners is a collection of 15 stories, linked by a particular structure and the presence of the same themes. The main theme of the stories is the psychological paralysis of men. Every story lacks of real actions, but ends with a revelation. The stories are arranged in four groups, which represent phases of human life: childhood, adolescence, mature life, public life. Each story is narrated from the perspective of a character and the language is various. EPIPHANY That is a similar technique to epiphany ‘the sudden spiritual manifestation’ caused by a trivial situation or a banal object through it the main character became aware; they don’t know themselves until they have an epiphany. But at the end, in spite of the epiphany, they come back to paralysis because they are anti-heroes, inepts PARALYSIS Joyce wants to represent results from external and moral forces linked to religion, politic and culture. Dubliners are weak, scared people with a lack of self-knowledge. The opposite theme is ‘escape’, it is originated by a sense of enclosure but characters have no the courage to overcame. NARRATIVE TECHNIQUE Each story is told from the perspective of a character, with the presence of the free direct speech and free direct thoughts with some mediations of the narrator. Language suits the social class, the position, the age of the characters. "THE DEAD" Gabriel Conroy – the main character of the story. Gretta Conroy – Gabriel's wife. Kate Morkan and Julia Morkan – Gabriel and Mary Jane's aunts Gabriel Conroy and his wife Gretta are guests at a party organised by his two aunts for the feast of Epiphany. In this party we can see the theme of suffucanting atmosphere which dominates every story in joyce's literacture. After the party Gretta and Gabriel go to their hotel. He talks to her but she seems distracted, so he asks her why she is so sad and she answer that it is because of a song she heard at the party, which triggered a moment of Epiphany for her. This song reminded her of a former love, Michael Furey who died for her. She tells him the story about this men and at the end of the story Gabriel looks out of the window and he too has an Epiphany, while watching the falling snow, he realises how his love for Gretta has been shallow and insignificant.
