HEART OF DARKNESS: “Heart of Darkness”: - is narrated by multiple narrators - is a framework The story starts with 5 characters on a boat on the Thames. These five characters are: - a lawyer - an accountant - Marlow (who is the only character that can be identified thanks to a precise name) - the unnamed narrator - the captain of the boat They are waiting on the boat because there is a big flood and they can’t go out. They are waiting for the boat to recede. The unnamed narrator starts talking about the past. He says that also in the past British people were brave and ambitious explorer. The second narrator is Marlow, who talks about the Ancient Romans, who came to Britain to explore it. Then, Marlow starts narrating his own story. He says that in the past he joined a Belgium ivory company to substitute the previous captain who was killed during his days with the natives in Congo. Once joined the company, Marlow was sent in Congo too. Once arrived at the Inner Station, the boat had some problems and there was the risk for it to sink. Marlow tried to understand what happened and, in the meanwhile, he became even more curious about Kurtz, an expert trader he had already heard of. Kurtz was an expert trader. Before going to Congo he was admired not only for his abilities but for his charismatic personality too. When he arrived in Congo Kurtz became an even more expert trader but people were scared of him because: - he was the best one in his job and he was a competitor for other tradesmen - he was a tyrant After the ship was repaired, Marlow met a group of native people he called “the pilgrims”, who told hi Kurtz was very sick. So, the pilgrims and Marlow left with the boat and they arrived on the rive Congo and they entered into the forest1, where they found a snake2. While the boat was passing on the rive Congo a group of Congolese natives tried to destroy the boat and kill the crew; then, Marlow made the boat whistling and the natives stopped their activity because they were scared by that strange noise they had never heard (“their faces became horrified, they leaped like animals and they shouted like cannibals”). Then, they continued their journey until when they finally met Kurtz. In front of his house he had a lot of pales with cut heads on the top of them. The cut heads were the one of native people who disobeyed him. Surprisingly, however, native people admired him. 1 Symbol of fear, darnkess and unknown 2 Symbol of evil
