Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an exciting option for many people who want to enrich their learning experience. But all of this, as travelling in general, may present many advantages as some disadvantages, essentially caused by skills never required before. For instance, before packing his bags, a student should consider all the pros and cons of such an experience, and this may origin a debate about the utility of studying abroad. On the one hand, the first advantage of studying abroad is the experience of living in another country, that means encountering the culture and history of that place and perhaps learning a new language, learning about other cultures and coming in contact with different ways of thinking and doing, so to become more open-minded and also more tolerant towards people. Secondly, this can be an opportunity to make new friends, to meet new people by taking courses and going out, and keep in touch with them in the future. Another instance is the opportunity of visiting new places and travel more, which is useful to distract the fatigue of studying. Undoubtedly, an experience abroad has a certain value which may be useful for future job and career, connected to the fact that it makes the student become more independent and bold, a go-getter, by getting used to living in a totally different environment. Therefore, broadening one’s horizon, learning new things about the world and developing a better understanding of what is around us make studying abroad an interesting and attractive prospect. Nonetheless, all these factors have a flip side: leaving your native country and set up home in a new environment can have some less attractive aspects that may convince students to stay home. First of all, tuition, room and living costs may be higher than what expected, unless you receive a scholarship that assures you a decent standard of living. Another negative aspect is caused by the fact of being in a foreign country: it could be uncomfortable because of the foreign language and of being far from family and old friends. You may be unacquainted with the host country’s policies and manners that can make it hard to integrate yourself, and food is one of those things that may completely be different from what you are used to. In addition, if the foreign study programmes do not coincide with your home university ones you may risk to get left behind compared with your fellow students, and the course contents might not be within your grasp. Finally, you can run into clichés about your home country or nationality which are always unpleasant. In conclusion, studying abroad, as like as many experiences of this type, can have its drawbacks and difficulties, but I think that it is a valuable experience that can enrich your life and improve your understanding of the world, making young people become more aware of their own independence and of what it means to manage your life, without depending on the others.
