Italy became a Constitutional Monarchy. POLITICAL ISSUES The Parliament was divided into: THE RIGHT WING: it supported the interest of the nobles, the wealthy middle-class. THE LEFT WING: it called for social and political reforms favoring the lower classes. ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ISSUES The national GDP was 2/3 of the French one and halfthe British one. Agriculture was well organized in the North, whereas the South was still based on feudal landownership. Factories were mainly set up in the North, but the secondary sector was rather underdeveloped. Railways were neither widespread nor very efficient. Mostof the population was illiterate and living in misery; the rate of child mortality increased; and the high rate of malnutrition brought about diseases such as pellagra.
