He rebi tholic Curch. points of view at the same. : the artist should be invisible trying to express tje toughts and experiences of other man ana, Time is subjective, !mportant is the inner world of characters, the aim is to render life objectively. Isolation and detachment of the artist from society. - From a more traditional style to a stage of experiment. DUBLINERS (1914) It's a collection of 15 short stories written in 1900. They tells about lives of 15 typical inhabitants of Dublin in the 20th century. The stories can be divided in three main groups: adolescents (the first three stories) caracteried by a strong sense of disillusionment and failure; another group of adulthood; the last group deals with the relationship between the irish individual and public life such as politics, musical world and the Church (the last story is The c-ad, a portrait of the irish middle clas in condition of mediocri*y. The protagonist is Gabriel conroy, a typical irish middle clas men who lives like a dead person). Narrative techniques: > No omniscient narrator ( rejection of victorian age): absence of a didactic and moral aim because of the imperonality of the artist. Use of an internal narrative perpective ( the stories are narrated from the point of view one of the characters) and eanch story opens in medias res. > Naturalistic, concise, descriptions full of detailes. > Free direct speech (That is the thoughts of the characters are introduced without any reporting verb ) > Valgpipe re: the language suits the age, social class and the role of charachters. > Realism mixed with symbolism: deeper meaning of external details > Epiphany: sudden revelation when details, moments buried for year in our mind memoty suddenly surface in your mind. (revelation of interior reality) v Themes: > Failure: the characters of the stories have the common nature of failure they experience. > Paralysis: it's not just a physical condition (caused by external forces) but it's a spiritual stagnation of the self (linked to religion, politics and culture), a universal lack of growth that affects the irish nation, it’s a spiritual and physical death.
