JAMES JOYCE MODERNIST NOVELIST ■ Who: James Joyce  ■ When: 1882 - 1941  ■ Literary movement: Modernist literature  ■ Major works: Ulysses MODERNIST NOVEL ■ The modernist novel was born at the beginning of the 20th century  ■ Sigmund Freud (theory of the unconscious), Henri Bergson (theory of time) and William James (theory of the flow of consciousness) contributed to the birth of the modern novel  ■ The writers of the time developed new narrative techniques to represent the spontaneous flow of the thoughts of the characters  ■ Stories are no longer told in chronological order  ■ A story can unfold in a single day as it happens in the novels of James Joyce starting from the analysis of a particular moment in the life of a character whose flow of thoughts we follow  ■ Joyce uses different narrative techniques to express what happens in a character’s mind: the epiphany and the inner monologue Ulysses             A modern Odyssey■ First published in Paris in 1922, in England it was banned for obscenity until 1936  ■ Set in Dublin  ■ The story takes place over a single day: June 16, 1904 (Bloomsday)  ■ The three protagonists are: Leopold Bloom, his wife Molly and artist Stephen Dedalus  ■ On the morning of June 16, 1904, Leopold leaves his home and will return only at two in the morning of the following day  ■ Leopold wanders around the city of Dublin, where he meets Stephen Dedalus  ■ The novel ends with Molly’s monologue reflecting on her past and present life ULYSSES ■ Wandering by Leopold Bloom in the streets of Dublin ■ Molly Bloom ■ Stephen Dedalus ■ Ironically Joyce uses the epic model to emphasize the lack of heroism and ideals of the modern world ODYSSEY ■ The journey of Ulysses in the Mediterranean ■ Penelope, Ulysses' wife ■ Telemaco, Ulysses' son
