He was educated at Jesuit schools, before the University College. His interests were for a European culture, and this led him to think about himself as a European instead of an Irishman. Joyce believed that the only way to increase Ireland’s awareness was by offering a realistic portrait of its life from a European point of view. He spent some time in Paris, but his mother’s fatal illness brought him back to Dublin. In this period, he decides to build his future with a writing career and published his first short stories, “the Sisters”, that is the opening story of “Dubliners”. In June 1904 she met Nora, and they had their first date on 16june, which is the “Bloom’s day” of Ulysses. Dubliners Is a collection of 15 short stories about the inhabitant of Dublin, who seems to be caught up in a web of despair. Joyce divided the stories into the ages of the protagonists, from childhood to adolescence, mature life and public life until death. The unifying element of the collection is moral paralysis, expressed in situations of monotony, loneliness and social conventions. The stories are told with irony, and are full of dichotomies like life vs death, past vs present, certitude vs incertitude and subconscious vs consciousness. They all reach their climax in the epiphany, that is 'the sudden spiritual manifestation' caused by an external Object or a banal situation, which reveals the character's inner truths. The description in each story is realistic, with lots of external details, even the most unpleasant and depressing ones. He mixed realism and symbolism, and every detail have a deep meaning. Also, the colors suggest the atmosphere of despair and paralysis. His style is characterized by two elements: the interior monologue and repetition of images, that is, chiasmus, which helps to create a melodic effect. The syntactical Structure maintains exclamations, questions, repetitions, interjections and exaggerations. The language appears Simple, objective and neutral. It is always adapted to the characters according to their age, social class and role. Eveline Eveline sits at a window in her home and looks out into the street while memories remind her childhood. Her thoughts turn to her abusive father with whom she lives, and to the prospect of freeing herself from her hard life. Eveline faces a difficult dilemma: remain at home, or leave Dublin with her lover, Frank. He wants her to marry him and live with him in Buenos Aires, and she has already agreed to leave with him in secret. As Eveline reviews her decision to start a new life, she holds two letters, one to her father and one to her brother. At this point she begins to remember old memories, when his mother was still alive, her brother, and her promise to take care of the house. The sound of a street organ then reminds her of her mother’s death, and her sad life, and so she embraces her decision to escape the same fate by leaving with Frank. But once on the dock of the port she cannot get on the ship and remains attached to the handrail while Frank is dragged onto the ship by the crowd.
