Dubliners perhaps is the easiest, everything is told by the character point of view, Eveline is an example of it. It is a collection of 15 short stories+ it is set in Dublin (portrait of the city). The stories can be divided in three great groups: * Childhood+ disillusionment and failure. * Adulthood+ (Eveline) impossibility to escape from suffering, the passivity and paralysis of people. * The sterile relationship between irish people and collective institutions + paralysis. The city of Dublin it is a static and provincial town (no cosmopolitan) and this causes the fact that people are represented as being imprisoned in a city that doesn't give them the chances to grow and develop themselves. Ireland + all his works are set in Ireland, his native country. He both loved and hated Ireland. It was a country in which dominated stagnation and stasis. We can find it in his characters (Eveline). The spiritual and physical paralysis+ nature of failure the characters experiences in Joyce’s works. They all have a desire and want to fulfill their lives, also overcoming obstacles. But then fall in a condition of inaction, a paralysis, both physical and spiritual, which represents the universal lack of growth. Epiphany+ it is a “revelation”, the moment in which the character becomes aware of his condition of paralysis and death. But is bot a way to escape, there is not possibility to change. The epiphany in Joyce is the moment in which the characters realize who they really are. They do nothing to change the reality. Eveline for example is unable to act. Style+ he rejects the third person omniscient narrator, rather he uses an_internal narrator, there’re a lot of points of view. He uses free direct speech and free direct thoughts. Eveline “Eveline” is a short story which makes part of Joyce’s collection “Dubliners”. The protagonist is Eveline, a young Irish girl, even if she feels like she is a middle woman since she has always took care of her family. Her father limits in many ways the autonomy of her daughter+ she can just go to work and do the shopping. He has problems with money. She sat at the window in her home and looks outside, it is evening and she starts thinking about her life. It has the form of the stream of consciousness, it seems to be part of the thoughts of Eveline. She wants to leave from her life and watching outside the life outside the window (“field where all children played”) she remembers childhood. She's leaving her monotonous life, which makes her “tired”, in order to establish in Buenos Aires with a man named Frank, “kind, manly, open-hearted”, she wanted to start another life with him. So every color, sounds, smells makes her think about the pros (love with Frank) and cons (like a life made of work, violence of his brother) of her decision, she asks herself some questions “was that wise?”, “What would they say of her in the Stores when they found out that she had run away with a fellow?”, which reveals her fear of future and judgment. However, the memory of her mother, stimulated by the listening of the “street organ player”, who said her to keep the home together as long as she could, makes her reflect about his decision, preventing her from leaving.
